Abuja, Nigeria |November 21, 2025 —
Hon. Obi Aguocha, Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, has formally confirmed that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been relocated from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to a secure correctional facility in Sokoto State.
The lawmaker, who has consistently advocated a political and humane resolution to Kanu’s case, described the development as “sensitive and deeply concerning,” urging the Federal Government to ensure that Kanu’s constitutional rights, welfare and safety are fully guaranteed despite the change in detention location.
In a strongly worded statement, Aguocha called for calm, prayer, and restraint from citizens across the Southeast and the wider Nigerian public, warning against actions or reactions that could escalate tensions.
“I can confirm that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been moved to a correctional facility in Sokoto,” Aguocha said.
“In moments like this, our priority must be the preservation of his dignity, his health, and his fundamental human rights. I call on the authorities to ensure that he is treated humanely and granted full access to medical care, legal guidance, and his family.”
Describing the relocation as a development that requires transparency and accountability, the federal lawmaker stressed that no Nigerian, irrespective of region or ideology, should be subjected to treatment that undermines the spirit of justice.
“This is not the time for fear or agitation,” he continued.
“I encourage our people to remain prayerful and calm. We must allow wisdom to prevail while we continue to engage the government in pursuit of a fair and peaceful resolution. The Southeast has endured much tension already, and we must avoid actions that could trigger further unrest.”
Aguocha reiterated his long-standing position that the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains one of the core drivers of socio-political tension in the Southeast.
According to him, addressing the matter with fairness and political insight remains key to restoring confidence, rebuilding national unity, and reducing insecurity in the region.
He reaffirmed his commitment to sustained advocacy, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and relevant security agencies to embrace consultation, empathy, and justice at this crucial moment.
“I will continue to engage the Presidency and all relevant authorities,” Aguocha assured. “Nigeria must show maturity and fairness. The world is watching, and history will judge how we handle this matter. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu deserves justice, dignity and humane treatment.”
As the nation awaits further details, the lawmaker urged Nigerians, especially youths and community leaders, to maintain peace.
“Let us not allow emotion to override good judgment,” he said. “This is a time for collective prayer, calm reflection, and unwavering commitment to peace.”
