First time Rep, Aguocha Emerges Rising Star as Abia Reps’ Scorecard Surfaces, Ben Kalu Tops

Abia |August 30, 2025 —

A performance review of members of the House of Representatives from Abia State has placed Deputy Speaker Hon. Ben Kalu (Bende Federal Constituency) and Hon. Obi Aguocha (Umuahia North/Ikwuano/Umuahia South Federal Constituency) at the top of the chart for legislative activity between June 2023 and May 2024.

The independent analysis released by OrderPaper Nigeria showed that Hon. Ben Kalu sponsored an impressive 90 bills in the one-year review period. According to the report, his bills progressed significantly, with over 12 percent already passed for concurrence and at least one signed into law. This positions him not just as Abia’s most productive lawmaker but also one of the most active in Nigeria’s National Assembly.

Equally noteworthy is the performance of Hon. Obi Aguocha, who despite being a first-time lawmaker, has already made a bold statement at the Green Chamber by sponsoring 12 bills. All his bills are currently awaiting second reading, underscoring his commitment to effective representation and a strong start in his legislative career.

Analysts have praised Aguocha’s drive, noting that his debut year compares favorably with some of his more experienced colleagues.

Hon. Aguocha has shown that being a first-timer is no excuse for inaction. He has set a pace that even some ranking lawmakers have not matched,” political analyst, Dr. Chukwuma Anaba noted.

Residents from his constituency also expressed satisfaction with his representation.

We are glad that our voice is being heard in Abuja. For Obi Aguocha to record this level of performance in just one year shows he is serious about the mandate we gave him,” Chief Nnamdi Eke, a community leader in Umuahia remarked.

The report also indicates Abia lawmakers' bill sponsorship within the same period as thus:
Hon. Ibe Osonwa (Arochukwu/Ohafia)  and Hon. Onwusibe Obinna (Isiala Ngwa North/South) sponsored two bills each, and Hon. Nkwonta Chris (Ukwa East/West) presented three, lawmakers such as Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, Hon. Godwin Ogah, and Hon. Ikechi Alozie had no bills recorded to their names.
The scorecard thus reflects a contrast in legislative productivity among Abia representatives, with Ben Kalu standing tall as a legislative powerhouse, and Obi Aguocha emerging as a refreshing and energetic voice of a new generation of lawmakers.
