Seize Ongoing INEC Voter Registration, OAU Urges Abians

Abia |August 29, 2025

Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), former Abia governorship candidate, has called on all eligible voters in Abia State to take full advantage of the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) online voter registration exercise.

Speaking on Thursday, OAU emphasized that voter registration is the first step in ensuring that citizens have a voice in shaping the leadership of the state and the nation at large. He emphasized that voter registration is a civic responsibility and the foundation of meaningful participation in democratic governance.

OAU, who has remained vocal on issues of civic engagement and leadership, said the registration exercise presents an opportunity for Abians to strengthen their voice ahead of future elections. He noted that democracy thrives when citizens actively participate in the electoral process. He therefore urged those who have not registered before, as well as those who need to transfer or replace their voter’s cards, to seize the opportunity provided by INEC.

In his words, OAU stated, “The voter’s card is not just a piece of plastic. It is the power of the people to decide who governs them and how their resources are managed. I urge every Abian who has not registered before, those who need to replace their lost or damaged cards, and those who want to transfer their polling units to seize this window provided by INEC.”

“If you are yet to register, now is the time. Do not wait until the deadline approaches when the process becomes crowded and difficult. Let us act responsibly and be part of the change we desire,” he added.

He further stressed that active participation in elections is the only way to hold leaders accountable and ensure that governance reflects the will of the people.

According to Akym, apathy or negligence in this regard often leaves room for misrepresentation.

“We cannot afford to sit back and watch decisions being made without our input. Registering to vote is the first step toward securing a better future for our communities,” he opined.

He also appealed to youths who constitute a large percentage of the population, and first-time voters, to embrace the exercise, reminding them that their involvement is crucial in shaping the state and the nation at large.

“The future belongs to you, the youth. And you must understand that staying away from politics does not exempt you from the consequences of bad leadership. Register, collect your PVC, and be ready to vote for the progress of Abia and Nigeria,” Onyekwere Akym stated.

OAU also commended INEC for leveraging technology to make the registration process easier and more accessible, while urging the commission to continue to ensure transparency, fairness, and efficiency throughout the exercise.

In conclusion, OAU assured that he will continue to complement the efforts of government institutions by sensitizing communities on the importance of active civic participation. He called for collective responsibility from traditional leaders, religious institutions, and civil society groups to ensure that no eligible voter is left behind.
