OAU Salutes General Ike Nwachukwu at 85, Describes Him as One of the Most Accomplished Nigerians

Abia |September 1, 2025 —

Former Abia governorship candidate, Onyekwere Akym Uche, popularly known as OAU, has felicitated with elder statesman, General (Senator) Ike Omar Sanda Nwachukwu (Rtd), as he marks his 85th birthday.

In a goodwill message issued on Monday, OAU described the former military governor and two-time Minister of Foreign Affairs as “clearly one of the most accomplished Nigerians in every sense of the word considering his sterling record of service to our country.”

Reflecting on General Nwachukwu’s years in public service, OAU recalled with nostalgia his tenure as Military Governor of the old Imo State. He particularly highlighted the relocation of the permanent site of the then Imo State University to Uturu during his administration, which today serves as the main campus of Abia State University.

According to OAU, “That singular decision laid the foundation for what has become one of the citadels of learning in the South East. Generations of Abia youths have benefited from his foresight.”

He further praised the retired General’s distinguished record in military and civil service, noting his pioneering role as the first and only Igbo man to command Nigeria’s topmost Army formation, the First Mechanized Division in Kaduna.
OAU also underscored Nwachukwu’s impact as Minister of Labour and Productivity, where he supervised the establishment of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE)—an institution that continues to play a crucial role in job creation across Nigeria.

General Nwachukwu parades one of the finest records of service to Nigeria,” OAU said. “As a military governor, minister, senator, and diplomat, he stood out for his commitment to excellence, patriotism, and integrity.”

The Abia-born politician added that beyond his official roles, the General’s career represents a model of leadership and sacrifice worthy of emulation.
His life is a living encyclopedia of service,” OAU remarked. “We must thank God for keeping him alive and strong to celebrate his 85th birthday.”

On behalf of his family and the OAU Foundation, Akym wished the General many more fruitful years in good health and happiness.
We pray the good Lord to continue to strengthen him and grant him more years to inspire future generations,” he concluded.
