Philanthropist and founder of the OAU foundation, Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche, has commended the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for what he described as “visionary, transparent, and result-oriented leadership that has repositioned Abia as a model of good governance in Nigeria.”
Akym made this remark while reacting to the recent SBM Health Preparedness Index Report 2025, which ranked Abia State as the most prepared state in Nigeria for health emergencies. According to the report, Abia scored 26.85, the highest in the country, driven by significant investment in health infrastructure, the highest per capita health spending (₦22,926), and a remarkable 14.8% of the state’s annual budget allocated to the health sector.
Speaking on the development, Onyekwere Akym Uche said the ranking was “a reflection of Gov Otti’s sincerity of purpose and disciplined approach to governance.”
He noted that the current administration has demonstrated that leadership is not about rhetoric but about measurable results.
“Gov Alex Otti has set a new benchmark for governance in Nigeria. The fact that Abia now ranks number one in the nation’s health preparedness index shows that accountability and strategic planning can yield tangible outcomes,” OAU stated.
“He came into office with a clear vision to rebuild Abia on the pillars of transparency, human development, and institutional reforms, and today, the results are speaking eloquently for themselves.”
Onyekwere Akym further praised the governor for approving the recruitment of 33 new medical consultants into the state’s health system, describing it as a bold step toward strengthening healthcare delivery and sustaining Abia’s leadership position in health preparedness.
“By employing more medical consultants and expanding healthcare access, the Otti administration is not only investing in facilities but also in people,” he said.
“This is the kind of forward-thinking governance Nigeria needs, one that prioritizes human capital and ensures that the welfare of citizens remains the centerpiece of government policy.”
Akym, a former Abia governorship candidate, also lauded the government’s holistic approach to development, citing Otti’s approval for the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) to deploy 100 new waste bins across the state and the ongoing direct labour projects in 48 locations as evidence of a leadership style rooted in action and accountability.
“From healthcare to environmental sanitation and infrastructure, Dr Alex Otti is demonstrating that governance can be clean, people-centered, and progressive,” Akym remarked.
“His administration has restored public confidence in government and shown that when leaders are sincere, citizens will rally behind them.”
Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche concluded by calling on other state leaders across the federation to emulate Gov Otti’s approach to governance, stressing that Nigeria’s transformation must begin at the subnational level through visionary and disciplined leadership.
“The Abia example under Alex Otti should inspire a national conversation about leadership and service. This is how a state should be run; with passion, integrity, and measurable progress,” he added.
