August Meeting: Women Are the Pillars of Our Communities – OAU Celebrates Abia North Women

Abia State, Nigeria |August 18, 2025 —

Former Abia governorship candidate, Hon. Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), has paid glowing tribute to women across Abia North Senatorial Zone, describing them as the pillars of peace, unity, and community development.

Speaking to newsmen during the 2025 Women’s August Meeting celebrations, OAU noted that the August Meeting remains a unique Igbo cultural institution that showcases the strength, resilience, and vision of women in building families and shaping societies.

Our women are the true pillars of our communities. They nurture homes, sustain traditions, and provide the foundation upon which peace and development rest. Without their tireless sacrifices, society cannot stand,” he declared.

Akym further explained that women play a strategic role in promoting grassroots development, citing their ability to mobilize, organize and implement community-driven initiatives that have sustained rural progress for decades.

Time and again, our women have proven that they are not just home builders but also community builders. The schools, health centres, and communal projects that stand in our villages today bear the marks of women’s dedication. That is why I hold our women in high regard,” he said.

OAU who has consistently advocated for gender inclusiveness in governance, assured the women of his continued support for policies and programs that empower women politically, economically, and socially.

I am committed to ensuring that women are not left behind in decision-making. Empowering women means empowering the family, and empowering families means building a stronger constituency. I will continue to advocate for your inclusion in every sphere of governance,” he pledged.

Onyekwere Akym also encouraged women to use the August Meeting as a platform to strengthen family values, mentor the younger generation, and promote unity across communities, noting that their collective efforts remain vital to the stability of Abia North and beyond.

This annual gathering is not just a cultural tradition; it is a reminder that when women rise, communities flourish. I urge you to continue being the light and the conscience of our society,” OAU charged.
